Four albums in and Tommy Torres (the producer/songwriter behind hit singles from MDO, Ricky Martin, Alejandro Sanz, and many others) has now spent over a decade as a solo star. No surprise, then, that with each album he sounds more comfortable in the spotlight, but as loose as his performances are on 12 Historias, the craftsmanship that surrounds him is still pristine, not sterile but lush and polished when needed, or soft, warm, and simple if that's the requirement. The songwriting is solid as Torres draws inspiration from the accelerating modern world, as social networking influences the great lead single "Querido Tommy," while the gloomy global economic climate of 2012 opens the album with "El Abrigo." Still, classic themes of love and loss are well covered, with the best example being the bittersweet "Sin Ti," a duet with special guest Nelly Furtado. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi
