Review

Luiz Gonzaga, the King of Baião, was an important singer/composer/accordionist in Brazil, responsible for introducing northeastern rhythms in the middle-class circles of the richer southeast region. As in all of his releases, he is accompanied here by a typical regional group. Not a virtuosic accordionist, on this album he registered only his instrumental performances, which comprise several northeastern rhythms such as frevo, xaxado, forró, and baião. Strongly rhythmic, fully happy and danceable, straightforward in its folkloric concept, this release is essential as a document for a better understanding of northeastern rhythms and as a bonus works perfectly for a Brazilian-inspired "quadrilha" party. ~ Alvaro Neder, Rovi
