Review

Buddy Greco has long carved out a career for himself as a middle-of-the-road pop crooner who sounds comfortable both with swing tunes and ballads. On first glance, the title of this CD, Like Young, is a bit ironic, since Greco's voice has aged through the years. However, his interpretations are full of knowledge, he knows his own voice well, and his phrasing is appealing. The backup band is mostly just used in support (strings are added on a few numbers), though there are occasional brief solos from Kim Richmond (on tenor), trombonist Bill Watrous, and Greco himself on piano. Overall, this is a nice, safe, and predictable album recommended for the singer's fans. Perhaps Buddy Greco should record a hot jazz combo album in the future and stretch himself a bit. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
