Review

The most popular mariachi band tackled pop-rock with Acapulco Girls. Leader Jose Hernandez was clever enough to invite the Beach Boys to sing on covers of two of their songs -- "Kokomo" and "Acapulco Girls" (a reworked version of "California Girls") -- which work surprisingly well, as does their version of Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called to Say I Love You." Of course, Sol De Mexico is smart enough not to abandon mariachi, and Hernandez contributes five strong new numbers, while they cover hits by Cristian, Rocio Durcal and Carlos Gardel. The end result is a typically fine effort by a fine group. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
