Review

Imagine the output of a collaboration involving genre bigwigs who also happen to be at the peaks of their careers. S.D. Burman composed the highly acclaimed music for The Guide with vocals from Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, and Kishore Kumar, with lyrics by Shailendra. For Burman, The Guide was an important comeback after a dip in his career during the late '50s and early '60s; for Lata Mangeshkar, it was a departure from her strained professional relationship with Burman. For the film (based on the novel of the same name by R.K. Narayan) itself, its music complemented and adhered to the tag of a true evergreen classic. The philosophical opening/credit song, "Wahan Kaun Hai Tera" -- an ecstatic soul-searcher concerning lost dreams, loneliness, and the wandering life -- is one of the few songs ever sung by Burman. His rasping unpolished voice gives the song particular significance and indisputable purpose, unreservedly attracting listeners' ears to the lyrics. "Megh de Paani de Re," a short two-lined chorus-based song, is also sung by Burman. "Din Dhal Jaye" and "Kya Se Kya Ho Gaya" are melancholic laid-back songs sung by Mohammed Rafi, expressing the twinge of lost love. Heavy orchestration is characteristic of Burman's music, and is brilliantly featured in "Aaj Phir Jeene Ki," "Piya Tose Naina Laage," and "Tere Mere Sapne Ab." In The Guide, S.D. Burman aligned his music to the poetic melodies of his earlier films like Pyaasa and Bandini, rather than the vibrant commercial success of a film like Aradhana. It has conventional music, and due to its eminence, represents a creative time in Bollywood's music. Moreover, The Guide is a complete album with no low points throughout, and touches upon varied human emotions to be remembered deeply for a lifetime. ~ Bhasker Gupta, Rovi
