Notes: I first heard this, the original version of Chains (written by Carole King), when I was at college. A fellow house sharer (I can't bring myself to say roommate) was keen record collector and a big fan of girlie groups and I was getting into them too. I spotted this compilation album which included Chains by The Cookies and various other more minor girlie group hits. Being a poor student, I thought I would check with my more knowledgeable house mate whether it was worth buying (it was in a sale). He said little, but a few hours later, I heard this song being played in his bedroom......... LOL so I never got the album! I first heard this by the Beatles, but I love originals, so yer tiz.

I can't imagine what happened. I played
it back to check the volume before I
submitted it. Well, now it doesn't seem
funny any more. What happened was, when
I came to read your reply, I had
accidentally left my audio card set to
raise the pitch 4 semitones, and you
were singing like Minnie Mouse. Let me
try that again: ...

Wait, wait, haha. When I was setting up
to duplicate what happened, I figured
out why I could not hear the earlier
one. It recorded okay. Now you have to
figure out why you can't hear it! (Can
you even hear your own recording?)

Yeah! Carole could write 'em, couldn't
she!

Well done, w0000f!

Dewi did you click "Preview Original"?
Doesn't it sound familiar?

The Beatles did several songs that were
originally sung by girl groups, didn't
they?
"Boys", and "Baby It's You" (The
Shirelles), "Please Mr. Postman (The
Marvelettes), "Devil in Her Heart" (The
Donays). And "Twist and Shout" was also
done by a lot of these same girl groups.
What else?

Oooh a trivia question - I will ask Rog
as he is good at Beatles trivia. I will
get back to you on this one - he's going
to check this one out. I hadn't heard
the original Devil in His Heart either,
so that was great.

Beatles at the Beeb which lists lots of
songs which the Beats never recorded -
he reckons quite a few may be girl group
covers.

In the meantime, he came up with this
little list:

Take good care of my baby
September in the rain (dunno if girl
group but Ella Fitzgerald perhaps)
Teddy Bears To Know Him Is To Love Him
(Well, Spector of course, but female
lead singer)
Falling in love again (our lovely
Marlene Dirtyb*tch as my mum used to
call her - not a girl group, but deffo a
girl).

The first bit of the last reply should
have said "Rog is going nuts hunting for
his copy of ............ The Beatles At
The Beeb"

Sounds interesting. An album of "songs
which the Beats never recorded." So it's
just an hour and 24 minutes of silence?
Hahaha.

Oh, I see. It's not an album. It's a
book with that list in it?

You little list has a lot of songs we
would have wanted to hear. Take Good
Care..., really? And "To Know Him..." I
know I would buy those! All of those.

LOL sorry - I seemed to be
incomprehensible quite a lot this last
weekend, and you aren't the first person
to mention it!

The Beatles at the Beeb is a book about
the radio shows and stuff that the Beats
did at the BBC - the early radio shows
were live (I think) and they often
performed songs that they didn't
actually go on to record, various
covers.

So - yesterday, he looked through this
book and found a few not mentioned
above, though pushing the girl groups
idea a bit:

I Call Your Name (Mamas & Papas)
I Just Don't Understand sung by
Ann-Margret
Keep Your Hands Off My Baby (it's a
Goffin/King and not checked who sang
it).

You'd like that book if you can dig it
up somewhere.

I would buy that album!

I have a double-CD album called (oddly
enough) "The Beatles Live at the BBC".
Nearly 70 tracks - interviews and
singing. It includes that "Keep Your
Hands Off My Baby" but none of these
other girl-group songs. (T_T) Some other
good covers I haven't listened to in a
long while: "Johnny B. Goode",
"Lucille", "Sweet Little 16", "Glad All
Over", Memphis, Tennesee"...

I think I'll pop that CD into the
player right now! (^_^)

(BTW, you know they did actually record
that Mamas & Papas song.)

Oooh well I don't know, I didn't do the
research - blame him outdoors!

I think Rog may have that album too - I
can't remember. I have no idea what he
has really, I usually say things like
"Why are you buying yet another Byrds
album? Haven't you got enough versions
of Turn! Turn! Turn!?" and apparently
that is very silly of me as they are all
different versions :O

I only recently bought an mp3 player
for Rog in the car, and he's filled it
up already, all with early blues - did I
tell you that already?
Posted by w00fdawg on 04/07/2009.
No, I didn't know your Rog was into
blues.

He's filled the player up already? He
does have an extensive collection,
doesn't he!
I added a 1MB chip to my old MP3
player, and I'm good for a couple more
years! Haha.

I can truthfully say my husband has a
big one.

Collection that is. Mind you, yours
could be bigger than his, it all depends
on how big it was before you increased
its size.

Posted by w00fdawg on 04/07/2009.

Oh, "collection"!

Yes, I suppose the original size would
be important info to make any sense of
my statement.

((Uhh, we are still talking about
MEMORY size, right?))

It just seems so silly that it was
orignally 128 KB! (That tells more about
the age of the thing than anything
else.) So now with the 1 MB addition -
that's all it can handle, it's maxed out
now - the thing is 9 times its original
size! (^_^) I've only filled it about
halfway, though.
Posted by HowardH on 04/07/2009.
I'm very impressed that yours is 9x its
original size. Rog's can't be increased
in size, I'll just have to get him an
extra one. (Childish guffaws.......)

LOL it's 4GB but now he's taken off
some songs that he feels don't fit in
(it's like the biggest cassette
compilation in the world) and there's a
bit of space on it. He wants another one
specifically for folky stuff. He's
actually loving it, as I have been
insisting for several years that he
makes no more cassette compilations and
he hasn't ever got around to making CD
compilations (though he could do it now
he knows how to add/remove things from
the mp3).

Ohhh thank you! Well, I treated myself
to singing 2 songs that had been sung by
others today - quite a change!

I am so glad you liked the song, Dewi.
Posted by w00fdawg on 02/12/2009.
Yes,I think I know the Beatles'
version.. I never thought that this was
originally sung by an all-girl group.
Have to check the original version.
Good one.. and I think the database
loves you.

Dewi, jump into this conversation above.
Posted by HowardH on 04/05/2009.
[email protected] ordering Dewi around!
Posted by w00fdawg on 04/06/2009.
Like she'd take orders from me!
'Twas more like a suggestion. (^_^)
Posted by HowardH on 04/06/2009.
Ho ho - looks as if she is ignoring you
on this occasion!
Posted by w00fdawg on 04/07/2009.
Maybe she is, haha.
But I know she's super-busy these days.
(Working 22 hrs/dy?) I'm still expecting
her to jump in (as ordered) in a few
days.

This is a good key for you, w00f! (^_^)
Posted by HowardH on 04/07/2009.
I can just hear silence. Is that a hint?
Posted by w00fdawg on 04/07/2009.
hheheheh oh now I can hear it! That is
hilarious! I sound better as Minnie
Mouse, I reckon - now if I had that vic
voice I'd be snapped up as a novelty
act!
Posted by w00fdawg on 04/08/2009.
That feature of my audio card is useful
with background music. And you can
hardly tell anything is off. But the
human voice sounds pretty odd, even just
a single semitone different.

The most amusing part of this is that
we can hear your jazziness or
syncopations even more clearly, somehow.
Yeah, you might be snapped up! (^_^)
